CL Score: A 0-100 Read on a Stock's Setup

The CL Score sums up a stock's current trend, momentum and valuation conditions in one number from 0 to 100. It sits in the stock-info box at the top of the Watchlist panel, and a toggle beside it plots how similar setups played out on that stock's chart in the past.

What the CL Score Is

The CL Score is a rule-based score. Each time you reveal it, ChartingLens checks a fixed set of conditions on roughly the last three months of daily candles (trend direction and strength, plus momentum), then adjusts the result for valuation (the P/E ratio) and for how far the analyst price target sits above or below the current price. The number is colored by band:

A summary, not a forecast

The CL Score describes conditions on the chart and in the valuation data today. It is not a price prediction, a probability of profit or a recommendation to buy or sell. Treat it as a quick way to decide which charts deserve a closer look, then do your own analysis.

What Goes Into the Score

The Gate: a Fresh Trend Turn

The score is strict by design. Its technical part only awards points when a fresh bullish trend turn is in place on the daily chart: the +DI line (the bullish directional line of the ADX system) has recently crossed above the -DI line and the MACD histogram is above zero. Without that turn, the score stays low. That is why many stocks show a low number on most days. It does not say the stock is bad, only that it is not in this particular setup.

Technical Inputs

The technical result is scaled to a 0 to 100 range before valuation is applied. You can see each of these inputs yourself by adding the ADX, MACD, Stochastic and RSI technical indicators to the chart, and our ADX indicator guide explains the +DI and -DI lines.

Valuation and Analyst Adjustments

The final number is kept between 0 and 100. The P/E and price target come from the same data shown in the stock information box.

Where to Find It

1. Open the Watchlist panel

Right sidebar → Watchlist. The stock-info box at the top shows price, P/E, EPS, price target and earnings date for the symbol on the active chart, followed by a "CL Score:" row.

2. Reveal the score

On Free the badge shows "?" until you click it, and clicking spends your daily reveal. On Premium and Pro the number appears on its own when a stock loads.

3. Read the color

Green for 70 and above, orange for 50 to 69, red below 50. A "--" means there is no score for that symbol (see What It Covers below).

4. Plot past setups

After a reveal, a small chart icon appears beside the number ("Show confidence markers on chart"). Click it to plot the markers, and click again to hide them.

The badge follows the symbol on screen. Change the symbol, or click a different chart in a multi-chart layout, and it resets for the new stock. On Free, each new stock is a new reveal. Browsing a watchlist on Premium shows each stock's score as you click through it.

Confidence Markers on the Chart

The marker toggle looks back across about two years of the stock's daily candles for days when it showed a similar technical setup, using signals such as a MACD crossover, a Stochastic cross up, a low RSI or a bullish ADX reading. Each match is then run through a fixed test exit: a 10% take-profit, a 5% stop-loss or a 28-day maximum hold, whichever comes first.

A small Forward Test panel sums up the closed test trades: how many there were, the share that gained, and the average gain. It carries the note that these results are hypothetical, based on past data, and do not guarantee future results. Click a marked candle to isolate that one trade, and click an empty candle to show them all again.

What It Covers

Ways to Use It

Triage a watchlist

Click through your list and spend your time on the charts where the trend has just turned, instead of reading every chart from scratch.

Confirm what you see

A high score means +DI just crossed with MACD positive. Add the indicators and check the cross yourself; our RSI, MACD and Bollinger Bands guide covers how to read them together.

Valuation check

A strong chart on a stock with a P/E above 80 gets pulled down hard. When the number is lower than the chart suggests, look at the P/E in the stock-info box.

After a screen

Find candidates with the stock screener, open each one, and use the score as one more input before you study the chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the CL Score measure?

It sums up a stock's current technical setup and valuation in one number from 0 to 100. The technical part looks at ADX and its directional lines, MACD, Stochastic and RSI on daily candles, and the result is then adjusted for the P/E ratio and analyst price-target upside.

Is the CL Score a buy signal?

No. It describes the conditions on the chart and in the valuation data right now. It is not a price prediction or a recommendation to buy or sell, and a high score does not mean the price will rise.

Why do so many stocks have a low CL Score?

The technical part only scores when +DI has recently crossed above -DI and the MACD histogram is above zero. Without that fresh trend turn the score stays low, which simply means the stock is not in that setup today.

How many CL Scores can I see for free?

Free accounts get 1 reveal a day, which resets at midnight UTC, plus bonus reveals from Daily Streak rewards: 1 for a 3-day streak and 2 for a 14-day streak. Premium and Pro reveal without limit, and the score appears automatically when a stock loads.

Does the CL Score work for crypto, forex or ETFs?

It is built for stocks. ETFs and other symbols without a P/E ratio or analyst price target are scored on the technical conditions alone. Crypto and forex pairs show -- instead of a score.

What do the markers beside the badge show?

After a reveal, the chart icon beside the score plots past days, across about two years of daily candles, when the stock showed a similar setup, along with how each test trade would have exited under a fixed 10% target, 5% stop or 28-day hold. The results are hypothetical and do not guarantee future results.
