Notes: A Trading Journal Beside Your Chart

Write the plan next to the chart it belongs to. Notes lives in the right sidebar of the ChartingLens chart app: each new note picks up the symbol on screen, saves itself as you type, and is stored on your account, so it is there on every device you sign into.

What Notes Is

Notes is a trading journal built into the chart app. Instead of a spreadsheet in another tab, you keep ideas, pre-market plans and post-trade reviews in a panel that opens beside the chart. A note can carry a symbol tag, so the review you wrote about an AAPL breakout is one click away the next time AAPL is on screen.

Each note is plain text: a title, a body and an optional symbol. ChartingLens is a charting and analysis platform with no broker connection, so Notes does not pull in fills. You record the entry, stop, target and result yourself, and the built-in Trade review template lays out those fields for you.

How It Works

1. Open the panel

Click the Notes icon in the right sidebar. The list shows pinned notes first, then everything else by when you last edited it.

2. Click New

A blank note opens, already tagged with the symbol on the active chart. Type a title, or leave the Title field empty and the note is named after its first line.

3. Write, and it saves itself

Notes autosave about a second after you stop typing. The status line reads Editing…, then Saving…, then Saved. Closing the panel or leaving the tab saves anything still pending.

4. Find it again

Search matches text in titles, note bodies and symbol tags. The filter chips switch between All, the symbol on your chart, and Pinned.

Titles and Symbol Tags

Pinning and Deleting

Click Pin at the top of a note to keep it above everything else; the button changes to Pinned. It suits a standing checklist or the rules you trade by. The trash icon asks "Delete this note? This cannot be undone." before anything is removed, and Keep backs out.

Templates

Templates are outlines you drop into a note with one click. Every account starts with one built-in template, Trade review, with these fields:

Open a note and click Template to insert it. The first line becomes "Trade: AAPL" when the note is tagged AAPL, and a note with no title gets one such as "AAPL trade review Oct 29". If the note already has text, the template is added below it.

Your Own Templates

Click Templates in the list view to manage them. New opens a name field and a text box, and Save adds the template. Edit and Delete work on every template, including Trade review, so you can rewrite it to match your own process. A pre-market plan, a weekly recap or a checklist for one setup are all good candidates. Once you have more than one, the Template button inside a note opens a picker. Templates are saved to your account alongside your notes.

Tip: end the first line with a colon

If a template's first line ends with a colon, such as "Plan:", the note's symbol is filled in after it when you insert the template. Every plan can keep up to 20 templates of up to 5,000 characters each.

Storage and Sync

Every note is saved to your ChartingLens account, and each device also keeps its own copy, so the list appears straight away. If a save cannot reach your account, for example when the connection drops, the note stays on that device and the status reads "Saved on this device · will sync".

Notes load from your account when you open the panel, and again on later opens once five minutes have passed. The refresh button beside the filters ("Refresh from your account") pulls the latest copy at any time. A plan written on your desktop before the open is on your phone the next time you open Notes there.

Take Notes During a Lesson

The Learn panel has a Take notes button on its course, lesson and practice screens. It opens Notes beside the lesson so you can write while the example plays out on the chart. On a window at least 1,200 pixels wide both panels stay open side by side; on a narrower window Notes opens on its own, and on a phone a message points you back to Learn in the bar at the bottom of the screen.

Ways to Use It

Pre-market plan

Before the open, write the levels and setups you are watching, tag the note with the symbol and pin it. Our pre-market trading guide covers what to check.

Post-trade review

Insert Trade review after you exit and fill in the result and what you would change. Writing down size and risk every time pairs well with the habits in our risk management guide.

A file for each ticker

Keep running notes on the stocks you follow. Load one from your watchlist, open Notes, and the symbol filter shows only that stock's notes.

Practice log

Step through history with Bar Replay (Premium) and log what you saw at each decision. See how to practice trading for a routine.

Notes is separate from the text and callout drawing tools, which pin a label to a spot on the chart. Use a drawing to mark a level, and a note to explain why it matters.

On Free and Premium the list shows how many notes you have against your plan's limit, for example "2 / 3". At the limit, New shows the upgrade screen instead of opening a blank note. Under each note a counter shows characters used, and on Free and Premium, close to the limit, it links to the next plan up. The text box stops accepting characters at your plan's limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ChartingLens trading journal free?

Yes. Notes is on every plan, including Free, which keeps 3 notes of up to 5,000 characters each. Premium keeps 25 notes of up to 50,000 characters, and Pro keeps unlimited notes of up to 200,000 characters each.

Does Notes include a trade journal template?

Yes. Every account starts with a Trade review template with fields for the trade, direction, entry, stop, target, size and risk, setup, why now, result, what went right and what to change. You can edit or delete it and add your own, up to 20 templates.

Are my notes synced across devices?

Yes. Notes are saved to your ChartingLens account, so they are on every device you sign into. Another device picks up your changes when you open the Notes panel there, or right away when you click the refresh button.

Can I see only the notes for one stock?

Yes. New notes are tagged with the symbol on your chart, and the filter chip next to All shows only the notes tagged with the symbol currently on the chart. Search also matches symbol tags.

Do notes save automatically?

Yes. A note saves about a second after you stop typing, and anything still pending is saved when you close the panel or leave the tab. If a save cannot reach your account, the note is kept on that device and the status line says it will sync.

Does Notes import trades from my broker?

No. ChartingLens is a charting and analysis platform with no brokerage connection, so it does not import or place trades. You record each trade yourself, and the Trade review template gives you the fields to fill in.
